A battery backup PV system has been introduced by XANTREX.  The PowerHub 1800 inverter can be run with a gas or propane generator, wind generator or solar panels and be connected to the house panel as well.  It is not grid-tied and cannot participate in net-metering.  It can provide 1800 watts of power from batteries for emergency use.  We can configure it to run as a backup system to an existing solar array with some modifications to the DC wiring that is probably already in place and the introduction of a shunt switch using three of the existing panels.  We also provide a metering system to keep track of the battery charge condition.  The cost with 3 - 170 watt panels is $6275 complete.

Each system is different as all our customers needs are different.  The configuration that is appropriate for your needs can be worked out.  Larger systems with more storage capacity can be provided, but be aware that battery storage is more expensive than solar panels in the construction of the total system.

ONE of the ALTERNATIVES to BATTERY BACKUP IS A GASOLINE POWERED GENERATOR with a DIRECT LINK TO YOUR SERVICE PANEL.

We can provide the Interconnect at the service panel, an outside receptacle and an 8 foot cable to your generator (not supplied) for $1125.00 complete and installed when completed as part of a solar installation.  A typical generator would be in the 6 to 10 KW range and would not be expected to power an entire home.  The object here is to run your refrigerator, well (if necessary), heating apparatus and several necessary outlets throughout your home.
